SS-31 (Elamipretide)

SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a mitochondria-targeting peptide designed to protect and restore mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the "powerhouses" of the cell, responsible for producing energy (ATP). SS-31 binds to a lipid in the inner mitochondrial membrane called cardiolipin, stabilizing it and preventing oxidative damage.

Although still under clinical trials, SS-31 is being studied for potential treatment of:

• Mitochondrial diseases

• Age-related macular degeneration (dry AMD)

• Heart failure

• Kidney injury

• Mitochondrial myopathy (muscle weakness from mitochondrial dysfunction)

• Protects mitochondria from oxidative stress

• Enhances ATP (energy) production

• Reduces inflammation and cell death

• May improve tissue and organ function in diseases linked to mitochondrial dysfunction
