- Adipotide, also known as FTPP (Fat-Targeted Proapoptotic Peptide) or Prohibitin-TP01, is an experimental synthetic peptide designed to induce targeted fat loss by disrupting the blood supply to white adipose tissueAdipotide functions by binding to specific receptors—prohibitin and annexin A2—found on the blood vessels that supply white fat cells. This binding leads to the destruction of these blood vessels, causing the fat cells to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death) due to the loss of their blood supply. This targeted approach aims to reduce fat mass without affecting other tissues.
- In preclinical studies involving mice and rhesus monkeys, Adipotide administration resulted in significant weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity. For instance, obese monkeys treated with Adipotide experienced an average reduction of 27% in abdominal fat over a four-week period
- While Adipotide has shown promise in animal studies, its development for human use has been discontinued as of 2019. The compound was associated with mild kidney toxicity in some animal models, which raised concerns about its safety profile. Consequently, it remains an investigational agent and is not approved for clinical use in humans
